While these medicines can effectively remedy high blood pressure (hypertension), their side effects may be overwhelming. Some diuretics have the potential to lead to renal failure, while other drugs may interfere with the liver’s absorption of other essential nutrients. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors that stop the activity of the angiotensin II enzyme are the top list of hypertension medications. Ativan, Estazolam, Zestril, androstatics are three commonly prescribed diuretics.
Calcium channel blockers are another class of prescription hypertension drugs. These drugs are highly effective in controlling high blood pressure and related conditions because they prevent the opening of potassium channels, which restrict the flow of blood to the heart. They also inhibit the release of a chemical called angiotensin II, which triggers the release of a protein called atrial myoglobin, which in turn, thickens the arteries and causes hypertension. ACE inhibitors are usually prescribed after initial treatment to prevent recurrence of hypertension.
Several classes of anti-angiogenic drugs are included in the list of hypertension medications. The most popular among them are beta-blockers, which inhibit the production of angiotensin II by blocking the receptors that attach it to receptors. Ace inhibitors, or tri-receptor inhibitors, are another set of anti-angiogenic drugs. These work by altering the actions of the enzyme angiotensin in the body. They achieve this through reducing the number of muscle fibers that become sensitive to the hormone. Both beta-blockers and ace inhibitors are initially prescribed to reduce the frequency of attacks of hypertensive crisis, but once the medication has been sufficiently established to achieve its intended results, they can be prescribed more frequently for maintenance purposes.
A relatively new entry onto the list is the diuretic: natures best remedy. Generally considered safe, it works by increasing urine output and thereby flushing out toxins in the body. It is usually prescribed after other medications fail to produce desired results. While it is considered relatively safe, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved it as a treatment for high blood pressure, despite sufficient studies indicating that it is effective. Diuretics should only be administered under close medical supervision.
Another natural ingredient that is used extensively in treating hypertension is essential oil. Eucalyptus and peppermint oils are often recommended for patients suffering from hypertension due to the relaxing effect they have on the central nervous system. While most essential oils have relatively mild therapeutic effects, a few, particularly eucalyptus and menthol, are recognized for causing depression and anxiety in some patients; these are to be avoided during treatments for hypertension. Caffeine content is relatively low in these oils and it is doubtful that high doses would have any appreciable effect on blood pressure levels.
Another member of the list is the beta-blocker bromocriptine. Taken in conjunction with diuretics, it is known to reduce the size of the cardiac muscle and thereby reduce the stress on the heart. It can have harmful side effects however, so much so that its use is reserved for special cases such as those where cardiovascular disease is not an issue. Bromocriptine is frequently prescribed for patients with severe heart diseases and atherosclerosis. While it does not appear to have any effect on blood pressure levels, its use is limited to those with heart disease conditions.
While these hypertension medications are recommended for patients suffering from mild or moderate hypertension, patients with serious heart disease or hypertension should consult with their primary care physician before starting a treatment regimen. For patients who do require medication to lower their blood pressure levels however, the best option is to try to prevent hypertension altogether by leading a healthy lifestyle. A healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other low-salt foods is always recommended. Regular exercise and avoidance of tobacco and alcohol consumption are also advisable.
