We know that we live in a high risk world with regard to hypertension causes. It is estimated that there are well over 100 million people living in the United States who have hypertension.

The medical term for high blood pressure is “hypertension”. This term simply states the pressure of the blood being pumped through the arteries and there are several different factors that contribute to this pressure. These factors include but are not limited to, the size of the heart, the amount of sodium in the bloodstream, the muscle relaxation that accompanies exertion and the stress on the heart from different activities that it is required to do.

The biggest of the known hypertension causes is an increase in the size of the heart. This increase is due primarily to the increase in the number of fat cells that the heart has to pump blood through. It is this increase in the heart’s size that increases the pressure of the blood that it pumps and this increased pressure in the blood can lead to serious problems such as heart attacks and strokes if the artery becomes completely blocked.

In addition, another one of hypertension causes is the reduction in the size of the “stature” or the heart’s muscles. As the heart grows in size, it also tends to become more susceptible to damage from atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the gradual formation of cholesterol deposits around the internal structures of the heart. This can be caused by either high cholesterol levels or a lack of exercise. As this buildup progresses it hinders the smooth flow of blood through the arteries and contributes to the increased pressure that the heart must pump. It is this increased pressure that leads to the hypertension symptoms of a “heart attack”.

Finally, atherosclerosis can be caused by another contributing factor which is the buildup of fatty deposits along the interior walls of the arteries. These fatty deposits can adhere to the internal walls of the arteries and restrict the smooth passage of blood through them. When this blockage occurs often enough, it leads to the development of what is known as “arterioscelerosis” – the gradual enlargement of the arteries and the accumulation of fatty deposits on their inner walls.

Being the largest of all of the hypertension causes, atherosclerosis can be very problematic. The buildup of fatty deposits on the walls of the arteries causes the heart muscle to weaken and eventually to fail. Studies have shown that people with hypertension are more likely to develop this condition.

It is important that all individuals who are at risk for developing cardiovascular disease should take steps to lower their hypertension causes. This includes exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy diet and consuming low-fat, low-cholesterol foods. For those already at risk, there are also pharmaceutical medications that have been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease. While they have not been proven to prevent cardiovascular disease in all people, these drugs do lower blood pressure and make it easier for the heart to pump the blood around the body more efficiently.

While there is no cure for hypertension, doctors can manage the symptoms and prevent the cardiovascular disease from developing into a more serious condition.
