One way to reduce high blood pressure is to increase the amount of water you drink daily. Researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center found that ordinary water increases activity in the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is a part of the body that raises blood pressure, alertness and energy expenditure. In addition to increasing activity in the sympathetic nervous system, water has other beneficial effects on the body, including reducing cholesterol and reducing sodium intake.

Adding magnesium and calcium to your daily water is one way to lower high blood pressure. A recent study found that the salinity of your water is also associated with its ability to reduce blood pressure. High-salinity water has higher concentrations of sodium, calcium and magnesium than water from inland sources. However, drinking water with higher levels of salinity should not be avoided altogether. It may be beneficial to add a little salt to your water, but be sure to consult with a physician before attempting to lower your blood pressure through this method.

While overhydrating may cause low blood pressure, there is no direct link between water intake and high blood pressure. The body needs water in order to maintain a normal, healthy level. However, if you’re a healthy person and regularly sweat, drinking two to three cups of water per hour is recommended.
