Does Drinking Water Lower Blood Pressure?

While drinking adequate amounts of water does not directly lower blood pressure, it does help. A healthy body controls its water levels, so dehydration causes blood vessels to constrict. When this happens, the heart has to work harder to push fluids to the rest of the body, increasing blood pressure. To reduce blood pressure raised by dehydration, you should increase your water intake by drinking six to eight glasses of water a day.

A recent study, conducted by Vanderbilt University, analyzed the effects of drinking water on blood pressure. They found that drinking 16 ounces of tap water decreased blood pressure by 40 mmHg within 2 to 3 minutes.

The results were consistent for an hour, and water consumption at the 60-minute mark sustained blood pressure for an additional hour. Although this study was conducted more than two years ago, it shows the positive benefits of drinking plenty of water. This is consistent with studies that have shown that water can lower high blood-pressure levels.

The most compelling evidence of the potential benefit of drinking water on blood pressure comes from studies that compared water-drinking schedules. One study, carried out by researchers at Duke University, found that a decrease in blood pressure after taking just four glasses of water was observed in older control subjects with autonomic dysfunction. The authors did not know the exact mechanism behind this response. However, their findings suggest that water does indeed lower blood pressure.

Another study, which pooled data from two separate studies in coastal Bangladesh, suggested that water can lower blood pressure. The results showed that drinking water could decrease blood pressure in people with autonomic disorders.

The researchers concluded that drinking a large glass of water decreased blood pressure after an hour. In contrast, the findings of the study showed that drinking small amounts of a salty drink increased blood pressure.
