This typically results from a problem with the lower esophageal sphincter, a clump of muscles in the lower esophagus.

Certain foods can also contribute to the occurrence of heartburn. For example, high fat meats and fried foods can relax the valve, making it more likely for acid to leak into the esophagus. Other triggers of acid production include alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods. In addition, some people experience heartburn when they are under a lot of stress. Furthermore, being overweight increases the chances of experiencing heartburn. This is because too much weight puts pressure on the stomach, causing the valve to open.

If you are a regular heartburn sufferer, you should try losing weight. While it may help, losing weight is not always enough. You can also try avoiding certain foods to reduce the risk of heartburn. Keeping a food diary is also helpful to diagnose your condition and prevent it from returning. Record your meal size, the time of day you eat, and whether or not you have pain after eating certain foods.

Heartburn symptoms usually start within a few minutes of eating and can last up to several hours. You may also experience hoarseness or coughing. Some people even feel that food has become stuck in their throat.
